Pools for an Older, Layered Community

Hiring pool contractors in Chevy Chase means planning around two things most suburbs do not have: homes from a carefully planned early suburb and a patchwork of local governments. Chevy Chase is a town, several incorporated villages and an unincorporated census-designated place sharing one name, so the first question on any pool project here is which jurisdiction your lot falls under. We build new inground pools, refresh older ones and add spas and stone patios, and we start every Chevy Chase job by confirming who issues which permit.

A suburb designed from the start

In the 1880s, Senator Francis G. Newlands and his partners bought farmland to build a streetcar suburb for Washington. The Chevy Chase Land Company, founded in 1890, held more than 1,700 acres and ran its own Rock Creek Railway streetcar line to serve it. Its deeds allowed only single-family detached houses and kept commerce out of residential streets. The result, more than a century later, is a neighborhood of established houses on landscaped lots, which is exactly why new pools here need careful siting around old trees, existing garages and neighbors close by.

Village permits come first in some places

Several of the incorporated villages run their own building permit processes. The Village of North Chevy Chase, for example, lists swimming pools and the replacement or erection of fences among the projects that require a village permit, and it states that residents are separately responsible for finding out whether a Montgomery County permit is also needed. So a single pool in North Chevy Chase can involve a village permit for the pool, a village permit for the fence and county building and electrical permits on top. We ask for your exact address up front, check which village, if any, you are in and line up each approval in order.

What we build in Chevy Chase

Renovating an existing pool

Many Chevy Chase backyards already have a pool that is showing its age. We resurface worn plaster, replace tile and coping, update lighting and equipment and rework the surrounding deck. A renovation is also a chance to fix safety gaps, such as adding door alarms or an automatic cover.

New gunite or fiberglass pools

When there is room for a new pool, we compare a custom gunite shell against a fiberglass model based on access, yard shape and how quickly you want to swim. Narrow side yards can limit what equipment and shells can be brought in, so we check access early.

Spas and patios

An attached spa or a standalone hot tub extends the season into spring and fall. We pair it with a stone or paver patio scaled to the house.

Barriers when the house is part of the fence

On compact lots, the back wall of the house often forms one side of the pool enclosure. Montgomery County DPS says that when first-floor doors or windows open directly into the pool area, those doors need alarms, unless the pool has an automatic cover. The rest of the enclosure is generally a 60-inch non-climbable fence with self-latching gates. There is one notable exception for older pools: for in-ground pools installed before July 1990, an automatic cover can serve as the barrier, though a manual cover cannot. If your pool predates that, we can tell you how the rule may apply to a renovation.

Chevy Chase at a Glance

  • Mostly owner-occupied. About 75.9% of homes in the Chevy Chase CDP are owner-occupied and 87.8% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier (Census ACS 2020-2024). Long tenures mean many existing pools are due for renovation.
  • Village permits for pools and fences. The Village of North Chevy Chase requires a village building permit for swimming pools and for erecting or replacing fences, and says residents must separately determine whether a Montgomery County permit is required.
  • Planned by the Chevy Chase Land Company. Founded in 1890, the Chevy Chase Land Company held more than 1,700 acres and required single-family detached houses in its deeds, shaping the established lots pools must fit into today.
  • Small incorporated villages. Chevy Chase Village covers just 0.42 square miles with 727 housing units, and North Chevy Chase, incorporated as a village in 1996, covers 0.12 square miles (2020 Census, Wikipedia).

Chevy Chase Questions

Does my Chevy Chase village need to approve my pool?

It depends on where you live. Some incorporated villages, such as North Chevy Chase, require their own permit for pools and fences in addition to any county permit. We confirm your jurisdiction from your address before design work starts so nothing is missed.

My pool is from the 1980s. Does it need a new fence?

Not necessarily. Montgomery County DPS allows an automatic cover to serve as the barrier for in-ground pools installed before July 1990; a manual cover does not count. For newer pools, a 60-inch non-climbable fence with self-latching gates is the norm. We review your setup during the estimate.

Why would I need door alarms?

If your house forms part of the pool enclosure and first-floor doors open directly into the pool area, DPS requires alarms on those doors unless the pool has an automatic cover. On compact Chevy Chase lots where the house is part of the enclosure, it is worth planning for early.

Can you resurface my pool without rebuilding it?

Usually. If the shell is sound, we can replace worn plaster, tile and coping and update the equipment. We inspect for cracks and drainage problems first and tell you plainly if a resurfacing will not hold.
